As the leading Nazarene theological institution in Asia-Pacific, APNTS is involved in helping other Bible Colleges throughout the region. In June 24-27, APNTS head librarian Mrs. Noreen del Rosario went and stayed at Visayan Nazarene Bible College (VNBC) to train their library staff in using Open-Source Automated Library System (OPALS), a web-based library system that enables access to the Catalogue anywhere in the world. APNTS is among the first Nazarene institutions in the world to use this system as part of the School in a Box program of the International Board of Education of the Church of the Nazarene.

The training included using OPALS and its systems administration and tools/reports, use of the Circulation, setting up and managing users profile, the Reserve Shelf, Weblink and the homepage design feature. Mrs. Lilian Tambongco, VNBC librarian writes: “It was such a privilege to have Mrs. Noreen Del Rosario, APNTS head Librarian, share her expertise on OPALS… Her knowledge of the OPALS Library system, along with her efficiency, made our training a productive one. OPALS features, especially the cataloging part, were meticulously explained to me and the student assistant. Thus, I am confident that we can bring this library development project forward and, with daily practice, have mastery of the system features.”

Library assistant Charles Inteligando also joined the training for cataloging using Z-import and about manual cataloging. Both learned using Resource Description and Access (RDA), which is a new cataloging standard. In just a week, VNBC’s library may now be accessed online at https://vnbc-gnec.kari.opalsinfo.net/bin/login.

The training was a joint initiative of APNTS and the Philippine-Micronesia Field Office through Dr. David Ackerman, Field Education Coordinator.
